Phil is a native of Alexander City, Alabama. He graduated from Auburn University in 1965 and received his law degree in 1968 from the University of Alabama School of Law. He was law clerk to Associate Justice Pelham Merrill of the Alabama Supreme Court. He joined the firm in 1969 and has been managing partner since 1986. Mr. Adams served as President of the Lee County Bar Association. He served as Opelika City Judge for 15 years. He has been very active in the Alabama State Bar serving as a member of the Board of Bar Commissioners from 1983- 90; as Vice President of the Alabama State Bar for two terms while serving as a member of the Board of Bar Commissioners. Phil also served as one of five statewide members of the Board of Disciplinary Appeals from 2000-08. He was honored to have served as President of the Alabama State Bar from 1991-92. He is a Fellow in the Alabama Law Foundation. In addition to his service to the Alabama State Bar, Phil was elected to serve as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association from 1991-95. He is also a Life Fellow in the American Bar Foundation as well as a member of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association; the Alabama Academy of Attorney Mediators, and the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.
Phil has been recognized by his peers as an outstanding lawyer. He has received AV Preeminent status since 1981. He was recognized by Birmingham Magazine as one of the Best Lawyers in Alabama 2007; listed in Best Lawyers in America 2008 in the speciality of Alternative Dispute Resolution; listed in Alabama Super Lawyers, 2008-2013; Best Lawyers 2011 Montgomery Area Alternative Dispute Resolution; Best Lawyers 2012 Lawyer of the Year, Mediation-Montgomery; and Business Alabama Top Attorneys in Alabama 2011. He is a registered mediator and concentrates his practice in that area, having conducted over 2,500 mediations since 1996. His experience as an attorney and an advocate has included representation of parties in some of the most complex and difficult cases filed in East Alabama.
He and his wife Chris have two sons, Josh and Kirk. He enjoys playing golf in his off time.
